During the latter half of the 17th century, Yuzensai Miyazaki developed new hand-painting and dyeing techniques, assimilating various dyeing techniques inherited in Kyoto. Hence the name yuzen. The stencil-dyeing technique developed during the early Meiji Period(1868-1912) enabled production of more affordable yuzen fabrics for the general public. Today, using both hand-painting and stencil-dyeing techniques, yuzen retains its primacy in dyed fabrics for kimono.
