A short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940) Here is a somewhat obscure tale titled "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" —obscure of course, until Mr. Button was conflated with Mr. Pitt. — This recording is the complete, original story as penned by Fitzgerald in the early 1920s. It was published originally in Colliers and finally collected in his popular Tales of the Jazz Age. One might call Benjamin Button an odd addition to the collection, as he was born in 1860, the year prior to Lincoln gaining his Presidency —a long way from the Jazz Age, which marked its begiining when Benjamin was 60... and he was... well, you'll have to listen to the REAL story to find out what happened before Hollywood stepped in...
The story is prefaced by Fitzgerald's brief humorous comment hidden away in the book's table of contents. Here he establishes both the tale's humor and its pathos and in a further sense, grounds it in our growing tradition of American literary sensibilities, echoing towards Mr. Clemens.
The musical accompaniment is from a public domain recording of L. Beethoven’s Cello Sonata in A, Opus 69, the fourth movement, as performed by John Michel. The piano is unattributed.

John Burroughs (1837-1921) was an immensely popular writer during his lifetime. He traveled with John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt; he spent various afternoons with Thomas Edison and Walt Whitman. He was Whitman's first biographer. One might say he had, for many years, his pen on the pulse of the times. Now the times are different and Burroughs is forgotten. Still, with relaxed patience, one can experience his works as they breathe the fresh simplicities of life, especially his intimate milieu: the great outdoors, the flora and fauna, rocks, water, the air and sky —and man's place in the midst of it all.
His poetry can be grouped with his minor writings; he had clear insight into his own facility in poems, to wit, the title page of BIRD AND BOUGH, his sole volume of verse, sports a self-deprecating epigraph from a line by John Bunyan: "Some said, John, print it; others said, Not so." All of his published poetry can be found in this collection, with the exception of "My Own Should Come To Me" and "Waiting." The later, frequently anthologized, was his most well known, and liked, even today. — A PDF of the poem texts can be found as one of the episodes.
— These poems were recorded at various times and in various places through the years. Recording qualities vary.
This is an on-going collection. Come back from time-to-time. See you at Slabsides!

David Summer plays Selected Duets for Flute.
Using his home recording studio, David has recorded some of the duets from the book Selected Duets for Flute, Volume 1 Edited by H.Voxman.
These flute duets are standard learning material for flute students taking flute lessons and can be fun to play for all flutists.
In addition to being educational, the duets can also be used by two flutes in performance. They are especially effective for wedding ceremonies, church services and other occasions calling for elegant music.
This podcast contains the recordings of both flute parts, played as a duet. As a resource for flute students and flute teachers, David has also recorded each of these duets in a flute 2 only version that can be used as a play along.
The matching flute 2 only version for each of these recordings can be found on the Flute Podcast page of David's website at www.summersong.net.
